What is behind your stucco
Why a small crack can turn into a bigger repair if it is ignored.
Many South Florida homes are concrete block. Additions, gables and upper floors are often wood frame.
- Finish coat. The textured face you see. Cracks start here.
- Base coats. Stucco applied straight onto the block.
- Concrete block. Porous. It soaks up water and holds it like a sponge.
- Interior wall. Furring and drywall. This is where the damp shows up as bubbling paint and mildew.
- Finish coat. The textured face you see. Cracks start here.
- Brown and scratch coats. The body of the wall, about three quarters of an inch of cement.
- Lath. Metal mesh the stucco grips.
- Weather barrier. Paper or wrap that keeps water off the wood. When it fails, the trouble starts.
- Sheathing and studs. Wood. Water that gets here rots it, and the stucco above it lets go.
If there is widespread moisture intrusion behind the system, full remediation or replacement may be more cost-effective than patching. A contractor should tell you honestly which route makes sense.
In their words
Three of them, in the customers' own words.
MXL Wall Systems did an excellent job on the stucco of my porch. The work was great and they ensured the area was cleaned up.
I contacted several companies to obtain quotes to have loose and cracked stucco repaired on my home. My stucco was original finish from 1971 and was badly damaged. MXL Wall Systems was by far the most professionally run company that provided a quote. The quote I received was less than others received … The attention to detail was impeccable.
Our roof gables were done with OSB board prior to calling MXL. The OSB board was probably installed when the house was built in 1978. It was super thin, areas of the boards were rotten, and I didn't feel our house was secure in the event of a hurricane … They replaced the rotten OSB board, waterproofed the gables, restuccoed with a new design, and cleaned up the area fully after completion.

Why Does Stucco Crack?
Cracks in stucco can occur due to different factors, including wrong mix proportions, insufficient mixing, poor workmanship, seismic movement and seasonal changes. Other leading causes of cracks in stucco are the house settling process and shrinkage-induced stresses, which typically occur during the drying period.
When should I “really” worry about stucco cracks?
Some are more serious than others, usually a good rule of thumb is the size and depth of the crack. If it is more than 1/16 of an inch wide, then it should be addressed with a stucco contractor.
How long does stucco last?
With proper maintenance, stucco can last anywhere from 50 to 80 years, in many cases, a lifetime! Just be sure to repaint and recaulk your home every four to five years and regularly inspect for cracks.
What do you put under stucco?
Sheathing is basically the “backing material” that can be found underneath the various layers of stucco that form the backing of residential and commercial buildings. They can be made out of wood, cement, gypsum, fiberglass and other materials. In between the sheathing and stucco there should be a weather resistant barrier (WRB) to prevent water from damaging exterior walls.
